Authorities of the Rivers State Polytechnic (RIV POLY), Bori few days ago, left the Brick House in Port Harcourt happier than ever after taking delivery of some buses and cheques from the state government for the institution.

A statement from the public relations unit of the institution explained that, the cheques are for payment of 22% salary arrears owed staffers of the polytechnic, while the undisclosed number of buses are meant to ease transportation and other operational needs of the fast expanding institution.

The Telegraph learnt that the gifts were in fulfillment of promises made to the polytechnic at its last convocation on April 23, 2005, which the governor attended in person.

Impressed by its high academic discipline and excellent effort at combating cultism, examination malpractices and other social vices which allegedly ravaged the institution before Dr. B.B.Fakea assumed office as the rector, Governor Odili had pledged to give him the necessary encouragement for improvement.

Other promises made by the governor on that occasion included award of contracts for the re-construction of road network in the polytechnic as well as provision of automatic employment opportunities for ten best graduating students of the state origin in all the 19 departments currently existing in the institution.

On return from the Brick House, Dr. Fakae advised staff and students of the institution to do everything possible to complement the landable gesture of the government in the joint effort to uplift the society through qualitative education and moral uprightness.

He thanked the governor for matching words with action and pledged the support and co-operation of the institution towards his commitment for a better society.

The rector who is a fellow of several international and professional bodies, however, hinted the intention of Rivpoly to computerize its operations in the nearest future, even as management has already established a staff computer scheme which allows a staff to own complete sets of computers at subsidized rates.

He urged beneficiaries of the scheme to avail themselves of the opportunity by be coming computer literate to enable the school achieve its target of computerizing its operations soon.

Dr. Fakae restated the commitment of his administration to stamping out all forms of vices from the institution in line with the determination of government to sanitize the school system in the state.
